The Manila Bay Rehabilitation Project (MBRP) of the Coastal and Marine Division is Chair of the Habitats and Resources Management Cluster in the implementation of the Operational Plan for the Manila Bay Coastal Strategy (OPMBCS) prescribed under writ of continuing mandamus by the Supreme Court in December 2008.

Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte approved the proposed 7-year rehabilitation of the Manila Bay.

The pursuit to save Mother Nature goes on under the Duterte administration. Previously, the President has called for the closure of the Boracay Island which is one of the top tourist destinations in the Philippines.

Following the rehabilitation of Boracay, the DENR has proposed for the rehabilitation of Manila Bay which is greatly affected by human activities.

The environmental department has proposed to rehabilitate it through a 7-year cleaning program.

Based on a recent social media post on the Twitter page of DZRH News, Pres. Duterte has approved the 7-year rehabilitation of Manila Bay proposed by the DENR.

Based on the post, the initial budget for the 7-year cleaning program is set at Php 47 billion and it includes the cleaning of the drainage.

The objectives of the MBRP relative to the implementation of the Cluster’s targets in the OPMBCS are:

1. At least one (1) area identified as Critical Habitats with its management interventions;

2. Review PA Management Plans of selected priority Protected Areas (PAs) in the Manila Bay Region;

3. Coastal communities awareness on protection and management of marine resources;

4. Review implementation of the Integrated Coastal Management (ICM) Plans as well as assess DENR issued Tenurial Instruments in the Manila Bay Region.

Outcome 1 Critical Habitats in Manila Bay Region identified and mapped with various management interventions through the concerned DENR Field Offices in cooperation with the LGUs

Outcome 2 Increased awareness of PA Management Boards in the importance of water quality and quantity as part of the Protected Area Management Plans of priority PAs in the Region (PCWFR, BNP, MPMGPL, MBSCPL and HTPL)

Outcome 3 Increased awareness and knowledge of coastal communities on the management of Marine Turtle, Macrobenthic Community and Avi-fauna

Outcome 4 Promoted organic farming in the selected eighteen (18) DENR issued Tenurial Instruments in the Manila Bay Region
