A marine engineering student from the University of Cebu (UC) died due to hazing conducted by members of the Tau Gamma Phi fraternity in Barangay Sambag 2 on February 27, 2022.
The victim, identified as Kurt Alacapa, collapsed during the hazing rites and was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead upon arrival. Five members of the Tau Gamma Phi fraternity have been arrested by the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) and are facing charges of violating the Anti-Hazing Law. The CCPO found items, including candles, paddle sticks, and belts, allegedly used in the hazing rites.
The UC administration condemned the incident and urged students to avoid joining fraternities and sororities, as hazing is a criminal offense in the Philippines under Republic Act 8049 or the Anti-Hazing Law.
Those who participate in hazing can face imprisonment of up to 40 years and a fine of up to P3 million, while those who plan and organize hazing activities can also be held liable.
