BUTUAN CITY – Criminal charges have been filed against the three couriers who were nabbed while transporting ammunition, grenades and food supplies for the communist New People’s Army (NPA) here.

In a statement Tuesday, Police Regional Office 13 (Caraga) director Brig. Gen. Romeo Caramat Jr. said the suspects have been charged with the violations of Republic Act 9516 (Illegal and Unlawful Possession of Explosives) and RA 10591 (Comprehensive Law on Firearms and Ammunition).

The charges have been filed Monday against suspects, Ferdinand Aque Dagium, 27; Rolando Aque Dagium, 34; and Marvin Pepito Merencillo, 26, who were arrested last Sept. 3 while transporting contrabands for the NPA rebels by the police and military.

Ferdinand is a barangay kagawad from Magsaysay, Sibagat, Agusan del Sur.

Seized from the suspects were 4,800 pieces of 7.62 AK 47 live ammunition, two rifle grenades, three motorcycles and assorted food supplies.

The three were couriers of Regional Sentro de Grabidad of the North Eastern Mindanao Regional Committee of the NPA.

Caramat said the arrest of the suspects and confiscation of the ammunition would weaken the NPA in their plans to carry out terrorist activities in the area.

The Communist Party of the Philippines – NPA is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. (PNA)
