Bam Aquino votes to stop TRAIN from passing Congress

The tax reform package will increase prices for all Filipinos without the necessary safeguards to protect our poor countrymen.

This is the reason given by Senator Bam Aquino as he rejected the approval of the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion or TRAIN.

While Sen. Bam is a co-author of the income tax reform bill and is in full support of increasing the take home pay of many Filipino working class, he voted no to the bundled tax reform package due to the provisions on excise tax on fuel and sweetened beverage tax, which will lead to higher prices of goods and services.

“I cannot, in good conscience, vote for the approval of this tax reform package. Bam on his no-vote for the tax reform package.

To cushion the blow to the poor, the Department of Finance proposed a cash transfer program with a P200 monthly financial assistance on the first year and P300 monthly financial assistance for the second and third year to help cover the increase in prices of basic goods.

But during the period of amendments in the Senate, Sen. Bam’s proposal requiring the financial assistance mechanism to be in place before taxes are increased was not accepted.

Bam stressed.

The DOF admitted that they cannot implement the financial support program for poor families in time for the price increases because of TRAIN next year.

The senator also lamented that the government is forcing hardworking Filipinos to compensate for our inefficiency in tax collection of both the Bureau of Customs and the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR).

Based on data from the Finance Department, Sen. Bam said the government can still collect an additional P726 Billion or 6.44% of GDP if we simplify, address inefficiencies and remove loopholes in BIR.

The government can still collect at least P231 billion or equivalent of 2% of GDP if the P1.8 Trillion importation gap or smuggling is resolved by BOC.

Bam said. | Senate-PR

Dear Kiko,

President Duterte to Critics: Adopt an Addict

President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday again had some choice words for critics of his war on drugs, and even made them a suggestion: adopt an addict.

In a speech delivered at the oathtaking of the People’s National Movement for Federalism (PENAMFED) at the Reception Hall in Malacañang, Duterte explained anew that when he assumed the presidency, the budget for the year had already been set by the previous administration. This means that he is limited to that budget, and thus cannot yet build drug rehabilitation centers for addicts.

Adopt an addict and see what happens. So that’s my advice,” he said.

“If you want, kayong mga bleeding hearts, if you really want to stop the violence ganoon, mag-adopt na lang. Adopt ng addict. Share a love between your fellow men. Sige…

Babae, lalaki. Just the same, kapag naloko iyan, sasaksakin kayo diyan. Massacre ang labas. Akala nila ganoon kadali,” Duterte also said.

Pnoy said “He is Willing to Return the Money Earned from Dengvaxia Deal”

Perhaps he feared that he might be finally imprisoned, former President Benigno Aquino III on Tuesday said he is willing to return the money he earned from the Dengvaxia deal. Following President Rodrigo Duterte’s comment that he will ask refund from Sanofi Pasteur, the company that produces that controversial anti-dengue vaccine, Aquino came out of his shell and said he is willing to attend the senate hearing.

On Monday, committee chairman Sen. Richard Gordon said he will invite the former president to explain his side on why the budget for the dengvaxia was rushed.

More than ₱3 billion funds for the controversial vaccine was released immediately months before Aquino ended his term.

“Wala namang problema. Hindi lang naman tayo ang direktang nakinabang doon, yong iba nasa kasalukuyang administrasyon din”, Aquino said referring to the kickbacks made by approving the vaccine deal.

He did not give details though on how much he made, but hinted that the former Budget Secretary Florencia Abad, and former Health Chief Jannette Garin made the biggest cuts.

Whether you like it or not, you can do nothing but to accept it”, Aquino said.

The controversial dengue vaccine has also caused panic across the country and there are already several reports of death on vaccinated children after Sanofi released statement that the effect of dengue is more serious on vaccinated children who has not contracted dengue before. The senate is currently investigating the matter and Aquino is expected to attend on the next session.

EPAL! Duterte

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) on has started issuing the iDOLE (or OFW ID card), which OFWs (overseas Filipino workers) can use for their transactions with government and private agencies regarding their employment abroad. However, Vice President Leni Robredo questioned why it has a photo of President Rodrigo Duterte.

VP Robredo told reporters on Tuesday.

The vice president added, referring to President Duterte’s memo last September 15, ordering all government agencies to display photos or paintings of heroes instead of elected officials.

last Monday, presidential spokesperson Harry Roque Jr. has already defended President Duterte, saying that the president really hates Epal (a term referring to a person who is seeking public attention), adding that the latter is most likely not aware that his photo was placed on the OFW ID. Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III also defended the president.

I just want to underscore the concern of the President for the welfare of our workers,” Sec Bello said, adding that more than 100,000 OFW ID cards are ready for distribution but so far, for returning OFWs or Balik Manggagawa (BM) only. Meanwhile, the OFW ID card can already be availed for free via creating an account at iDOLE.ph
