Lumad leaders willing to take witness stand vs Ocampo, Castro

Indigenous Peoples (IP) holds the resolution of the case Bayan Muna Rep. Satur Ocampo and ACT parytlist Rep. Francisca Castro

The tribal leaders of Mindanao are ready to testify should the Philippine National Police (PNP) file a case against ACT Teachers party-list representative France Castro, ex-Makabayan representative Satur Ocampo and 16 others.

This was the statement of Lipatuan Joel Unad, chairman of Mindanao Indigenous Peoples Council of Elders and Leaders (MIPCEL) regarding the human trafficking raps filed against the lawmakers and their cohorts after they were arrested by authorities for allegedly holding 14 minors without the consent of the parents in Davao del Norte.

“Kami handa na mag-witness kung ang kapulisan sila ay mag-file ng kaso against sa kanila Satur Ocampo at saka yung ACT representative na si France Castro,” Unad said.

According to Bae Diwata of MIPCEL-Agusan del Sur, the Indigenous Peoples (IP) council of elders has heard testimonies of atrocities committed by Ocampo and his group against the tribal communities.

“The numerous other concerns of the IP and other atrocities / violations by CPP-NPA-NDF is a serious issue,” Diwata added.

The group also expressed objection to the early release of Ocampo and Castro amid investigation.

“We vehemently condemned the early release of the former Bayan Muna Rep. Satur Ocampo and ACT parytlist Rep. Francisca Castro while the investigation is still on going,” Diwata said. — Cathy Maglalang | UNTV News & Rescue

Defeating NPA a priority of incoming AFP chief

0

Incoming Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief-of-Staff, Lt. Gen. Benjamin Madrigal Jr., said defeating the New People’s Army (NPA) will be a priority once he assumes post next week.

In an interview with reporters Thursday, Madrigal said the task is doable as both the local and national government work together in combating the NPA threat.

“Defeating the NPA is not the only part of the campaign, it is also important to cut off their support system,” he said in Filipino.

Madrigal said agencies must start implementing a “culture of peace and development” and attend to the need of the people residing in the conflict-affected areas.

The incoming AFP chief is a member of the Philippine Military Academy Class of 1985 and a classmate of outgoing military head, Gen. Carlito Galvez Jr.

Madrigal, who is also the 51st AFP chief-of-staff, served notably as 4th Infantry Division commander, Southern Luzon Command and Eastern Mindanao Command chief.

His appointment as next AFP chief was approved last Dec. 5 by President Rodrigo R. Duterte as Galvez will be retiring on Dec. 12. Madrigal is set to retire on September 28, 2019.

“It also means that government officials and policies should respect the internal governance and policies of all religions as long as they do not create any public harm.” Idinagdag ng obispong si Pabillo na sinabi ng presidente sa mga tao na huminto sa pagpunta sa simbahan, at ito ay nagsasaad ng isang paglabag sa paghihiwalay ng Simbahan at Estado.

“What he does is already a form of religious persecution. And he does it unprovoked! He inserts his tirades in speeches which have nothing to do with the Church nor its practices at all.”

Basahin ang full post ni Bishop Broderick Pabillo:

Separation of Church and State Separation of Church and State is often used to protest when religious leaders denounce government policies and government officials as they do injustice and oppress the people.

But this is a wrong principle to invoke because Church people, even as religious leaders, do not lose their citizenship, therefore their right and duty, to participate in political matters for the sake of the common good.

Besides, it is within the mandate of the Church to proclaim what is good and to denounce what is evil wherever these may be found.

The doctrine of separation of Church and State, in fact, has been laid down for the government in order that it may not favor one religion over the other, but should treat all legitimate religions equally. It also means that government officials and policies should respect the internal governance and policies of all religions as long as they do not create any public harm.

This principle has been laid down in order to assure the freedom of religion of everyone. Each citizen has a right to join any religion and to practice it according to its teachings. What can we say then if the very president of the country destroys the good name of a religion, or tells the adherents of that religion not to follow its practices and teachings, such as going to church? Is this not a breach of the principle of the separation of Church and State? And these are precisely what Duterte is doing! Nay, more!

What he does is already a form of religious persecution. And he does it unprovoked! He inserts his tirades in speeches which have nothing to do with the Church nor its practices at all.

Are these tirades just outbursts of unresolved issues or hidden anger that lurk within his mind that he does not speak rightly anymore? If so, we should really pray for him and be afraid for our country. Pray for him, because he is not in his right senses; pray for our country, because we have someone in the helm who is mentally or emotionally sick. But no! These tirades can also be deliberately planned.

They are strategies to divert the attention of the people to what is seriously wrong in the country. There are really serious issues in the country which are getting out of control. Many people are suffering because of the economy. The inflation is getting out of hand and many people are getting poorer.

None of the promises of change ever took off: the traffic situation is worse, joblessness is not being arrested, the promised end of ENDO is nowhere in sight, criminality is on the rise, and the drug situation is worse in spite of the tens of thousands unjustly killed and more tens of thousands orphaned.

Now the Chinese connections of Duterte is being publicly questioned. He has brought the country to the tutelage of China and has greatly compromised our territorial sovereignty. A way to keep these problems from the attention of the people is to create non-issues for the people to talk about. Hence the unprovoked attacks on the Catholic Church and its leaders. Poor man!

Does he think that Filipinos are slow of intelligence and can easily be fooled? Whatever purpose he may have in ranting against the Church, he is breaking the separation of Church and State! This in itself is a grave abuse of power!

Wow! Son Of A Filipino Farmer Made It To The Harvard University

0

Poverty is an issue that many of our nation’s children are facing right now. Many of them couldn’t enroll nor can afford to acquire education, even in public schools because of poverty.

On the other hand, many of us also believe that good education has the power to change our life to be better. But the challenge is—how can we overcome poverty with the help of education if it’s not easy to achieve.

This is the story of Romnick Blanco, a rice and vegetable farmer and housewife son who was granted a full scholarship from Harvard University—one of the most prestigious schools in the world. Romnick was the seventh of nine sons who grew up in a small municipality in the northern foothills of the Sierra Madre.

His story can bring a constant reminder that we should not stop believing that our dreams can come true.

Romnick used to walk miles just to get to school, which also involved crossing a bridge-less river under the scorching heat almost every day. He endured all the hardships along the way, just to fulfill his hope of having a better life for his family and their community.

In 2011, Romnick became a sponsored child of a local charity foundation called GreenEarth Heritage that assisted impoverished farmers’ children by giving them the ancillary costs of a public school including a free access to English and computer literacy classes.

He was able to pursue his studies despite their family’s economic status with the help of this sponsorship.

The foundation noticed his commitment to his studies, and through their vision, dedication, and support, they grant him a five-year scholarship in one of the country’s oldest international high schools – the International School Manila. Romnick graduated from this school on May 26, 2017.

After graduating, the blessing of the Lord didn’t stop there, Romnick was surprised that he passed the four full scholarships by four prestigious universities, including in the UAE – Harvard, Dartmouth, Wesleyan University and New York University in Abu Dhabi.

Of the four prestigious universities, Romnick accepted the offer from Harvard and started school this 2018. He had a full scholarship to Harvard that covers his full tuition, plane tickets, accommodation and clothing.

Romnick hopes that more farmers’ children like him would be given the same opportunities he was given.

#TATAKDU30: Pres. Duterte spearheads Panguil Bay Bridge groundbreaking

On Wednesday, President Rodrigo Duterte led in the groundbreaking and capsule-laying for the construction of what is purported to be the longest bridge in the country “Panguil Bay Bridge (PBB) project” that aims to connect Tangub City, Misamis Occidental and Tubod.

President Duterte was received by local officials led by Lanao del Norte Governor Imelda Quibranza-Dimaporo, 1st District Rep. Mohammad Khalid Quibranza Dimaporo, 2nd District Rep. Abdullah “Bobby” Dimakuta Dimaporo and Tubod Mayor Leoncio Bagol, along with Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Mark Villar and Korean Ambassador to the Philippines Han-Dong Man.
Villar said the two-lane 3.7 kilometer extradosed-type bridge will shorten the travel time between the two provinces to seven minutes from one and a half hour via a barge from Mukas Port in Kolambugan, Lanao del Norte to Ozamis City.

Villar said the Panguil Bay Bridge spans 3.772 kilometers to connect Tangub City, Misamis Occidental and Tubod, Lanao del Norte in Northern Mindanao (Region X.), consisting of two lanes, with 15 meters width as good as four lanes.

The total length of the bridge is 2.360 kilometers and the total approached road is L-1.4212 kilometers.

Expected to be completed in 2021, PBB is the first of the 16 bridges to be built to connect Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao under the Duterte administration’s “Build, Build, Build” program, Villar said.
It will also facilitate 24/7 mobility of people, goods and services and is expected to propel economic growth in the surrounding areas.
The project cost is P7. 352 billion funded by the Korean Economic Development Cooperative Agreement (KEDCA) through a financing loan to the national government.
The President thanked the Republic of Korea by saying “this is their gift for us and there’s more, he said.
“Korea has a special attachment to the Filipinos, you know why? We fought in the Korean War and a lot of Filipinos died,” Pres. Duterte explained.
Governor Imelda Dimaporo said: “I am so happy that finally, after more than 30 years, this project was realized, No less than President Rodrigo Roa Duterte came here para sa (for the) ground breaking.
“The people here are really very happy. It’s a dream come true,” Dimaporo said.
She added that the bridge is like the door of investments not only in Lanao del Norte but even in Misamis Occidental and the cities of Tangub and Ozamiz.
“We have so many attractions here. In fact the bridge will also become a tourist attraction because it has a design, it has a character, and it is the longest in the Philippines”, she added.

The Duterte Administration is clearly doing an excellent job to the Filipino people.

Duterte appointed Lucas Bersamin as the new Chief Justice

0

MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte has appointed Lucas Bersamin as the new Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, a source from Malacañang said Wednesday.

The 69-year-old Bersamin replaced Teresita Leonardo-De Castro who retired from government service in October after serving as top magistrate for 41 days following the dismissal of Maria Lourdes Sereno.

Bersamin was presiding judge of the Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 96 in 1986, and was a Court of Appeals associate justice prior to being appointed to the high court by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

As associate justice, Bersamin voted in favor of Sereno’s ouster, the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos’ burial at the Heroes’ Cemetery, and the Mindanao martial law declaration and extension, among others.

Sereno’s appointment was invalidated in May through a quo warranto petition for failure to faithfully file her Statements of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth (SALNs). Duterte’s earlier decision for naming De Castro as Chief Justice was based on seniority rule.

Duterte had 90 days from Oct. 10, when De Castro’s retirement took effect, to choose the next chief magistrate.

Acting Chief Justice Antonio Carpio, Associate Justices Diosdado Peralta, Estela Perlas-Bernabe, and Andres Reyes Jr. also vied for the chief magistrate post.
