Last week, Liberal Party (LP) announced that they would form a political group that would match the senatorial bets of the ruling party PDP-Laban on the upcoming 2019 senatorial elections.
LP President, Senator Francis Pangilinan called the group ‘the resistance’ and he believed that the senate need a strong opposition that will resist the “slide to authoritarianism and anti-democratic rule.”
“We hope to help build together the broadest coalition of groups and individuals united behind defending our freedoms and our civil and political rights,” Pangilinan said in a statement released Tuesday.
Pangilinan also said that the LP need the support of other political groups to bring the “genuine opposition” in the 18th congress.
Because of this announcement, several netizens were curious on the possible bets of the Liberal Party that would face the candidates of the ruling party.
In the article posted by politics.com.ph, they gathered a ‘promo photo’ that showed the some of the old faces of the Liberal Party that might join the resistance in the senatorial election.
These are:
– Senator Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV
– Magdalo party-list Rep. Gary Alejano
– Northern Samar Rep. Raul Daza
– Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman
– Dinagat Islands Rep. Kaka Bag-ao
– Quezon City Rep. Jose Christopher “Kit” Belmonte
– Cebu City Mayor Tommy Osmeña
– Former senator Mar Roxas
– Former senator TG Guingona
– Former senator Ramon Magsaysay Jr.
– Former Quezon Rep. Lorenzo “Erin” Tañada Jr.
It also carried a tagline “Isang boto lang po laban sa nakaupo.” which apparently referring to President Rodrigo Duterte.
But, one of the politicians who included on the list, Rep. Lagman said that he’s still have no plans to run for the senate.
However, he thanked the “Coalition ng Demokrasya” for including him into the list of the possible senate bets of the opposition.
“Thanks for the endorsement by the coalition ng demokrasya but I have no intention of running for the Senate at the moment,” Lagman said.
Meanwhile, PDP-Laban is still finalizing their bets in the upcoming senatorial elections.
Some of the possible bets of the ruling party are Senators Sonny Angara, Nancy Binay, JV Ejercito, Grace Poe and Cynthia Villar.
Special Assistant to the Vice President Bong Go, PNP Director General Chief Bato Dela Rosa and presidential spokesperson Harry Roque are also possible to run for the senate, however they’re still not confirming if they’re going to push it.
