“Bloody Philippines,” August 18, 2017

“It’s hard to wrap my mind around the fact that people are okay with murder because their leader says it is okay.” August 18, 2017

Robredo in Tears amid ASEAN Summit Snub

Vice President Leni Robredo was reportedly fell sick after discharging a glassful of tears on Saturday when Malacañang officials told her that she was not invited to attend the ASEAN Summit.

Vice President Leni Robredo was reportedly fell sick after discharging a glassful of tears on Saturday when Malacañang officials told her that she was not invited to attend the ASEAN Summit.

Breaking tradition, Malacañang did not invite Vice President Leni Robredo to join Philippine officials tasked to welcome leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) arriving this weekend.

The Vice President will not be among the government officials who will greet the foreign leaders upon their arrival for the 31st ASEAN Summit and Related Summits at the Clark International Airport and the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

The official Guide to ASEAN Practices and Protocol states that visiting heads of states, ministers, and the secretary-general of the ASEAN “shall be received and sent off by the appropriate representative of the host country” and “in accordance with the protocol of the host country.”

Veteran Malacañang reporter Marichu Villanueva said in her Philippine Star column that traditionally, “one of the glorified tasks” of the Philippine vice president is to “welcome state guests in red carpet reception rites at the airport.”

Robredo on Friday with teary eyes refused to entertain reporters while exiting her office and immediately went home.

The Vice President, according to Bombo Radyo Naga on Sunday said she is not “feeling well and looked frustrated” while still refusing to answer any reporter who tried to reach her out. /Nikki Maliksi/ – (c) altervisata.org

Katrina Stuart Santiago of the Manila Times expressed her strong opinion against President Duterte singing upon “orders” of President Trump because according to her, Duterte just showed that we are America’s little brown monkey.

“I am ashamed to have #Duterte as president of my country, followed by # DumpTrump and BanTrumpPh hashtags.”

Credits to Antonio Contreras for the screen grab photo

Santiago’s post did not make a lot of people happy especially among Duterte supporters.

De La Salle University professor Antonio Contreras took to Facebook to defend President Duterte from critics.

“So what is wrong about the President singing live during the gala event? If there is one beautiful thing that happened, it would be that. He embodied everything Filipino in us. Informal. Weird sense of humor. We always oblige a visitor. And that doesn’t mean we are under his thumb or even like him.

And on this I really have to call out my former Manila Times colleague Katrina Stuart Santiago here for calling the Presidemt a little brown monkey for doing so.

Criticisms are fine Katrina. It is okay if you turn it into your art. But art is supposed to be human, and on this one it isn’t.”

Paeng Doming agrees with Prof. Contreras. “Tama ka, Prof. Singing has and always will be one of the most positive identity or traits of us being pinoys. That bitter lady is only hating on Digong because yellowturd nga sya. I’m sure kung si Abnoy pa ang kumakanta ng IT’S RAINING MEN sa ASEAN Gala Dinner eh all praises lang sya sa singing prowess ni Abnoy. Shame on her bitter face lang.”

Netizen Benedict Exconde sees nothing wrong PRRD obliging to Pres. Trump’s request. “Last night’s gala dinner had a Filipino touch in it. The fun-loving singing after the dinner, the hospitality of the President and Ms. Avanceña. A very Filipino gala dinner that foreigners will surely appreciate- and we should be proud of it.”

Ilang Residente ng Marawi, Kakasuhan si Duterte dahil sa Pagkawasak ng Kanilang mga Tahanan at Lungsod

Some Marawi residents who were united as a group are planning to file a class suit against the government under the administraiton of Pres. Rody Duterte for the alleged destruction of the city’s properties and the deaths of civilians due to the conflict between state forces and local terrorists who pledges allegiance wit the ISIS.

In a joint statement released to the local media in Mindanao, two support groups of the Marawi Crisis victims said that Pres. Duterte should be made accountable for the devastation brought by the fighting between government troops and members of the Abu Sayyaf, Maute Group and the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighers (BIFF).

The Marawi ciris has displaced thousands of civilians who fled during the first few days of the conflict. During the siege, residents have witnessed various forms of abuses being committed not just by the extremists but also by the state agents.

According to Jerome Succor Aba, spokesperson of the Suara Bangsamoro, the above-mentioned incidents will be the basis of the class suit that the victims will be filing against the Duterte administration.

Aide Ibrahim of Tindeg Ranao also revealed that many of hte evacuees have already signed affidavits documenting the abuses they had experienced by government troops.

She said during the second round of the National Interfaith Humanitarian Mission (NIHM), some of the civilians have recounted the violations allegedly committed by soldiers. Ibrahim said more evacuees are willing to execute affidavits to bolster the filing of the class suit.

Aba said the reports collated from the NIHM will be also be used as documentary evidence. Both Ibrahim and Aba have yet to give the exact date of the filing as more documents are still being prepared.

In a joint statement, both Tindeg Ranao and Suara Bangsamoro are calling for the lifting of martial law in Mindanao as residents in Marawi have expressed their desire to return to their homes after Pres. Rodrigo Duterte declared the besieged city as “liberated.”

So para kay Mr. Cesar Chavez, I would like you sir to order your people to stock diesel, gasoline, and other things and make it easily accessible to MRT trains para maiwasan natin ang delays.

Hontiveros said with confidence that made everyone scratched their heads.

Money Transfer/Remittances Fees sa Saudi Magkakaroon na ng 5% VAT

VAT is being applied to transfers in the kingdom but most other financial services are exempt

The cost of transferring money in Saudi Arabia will increase from next year as the country applies a 5 per cent value added tax to transaction fees.

The General Authority of Zakat and Tax confirmed VAT would apply to the transfer fee and not the transfer amount and this would be collected from the person doing the transfer.

Other financial services will be exempt including interest on loans or lending charges from credit cards, life insurance, mortgages, leasing finance, banknotes, security transactions, current accounts, deposits and savings accounts.

Enterprises engaged in economic activity subject to the tax will have the right to recover the amount paid. However, those in the exempt category are not entitled to recover the amount of tax paid on their taxable inputs.

Saudi Arabia is introducing the 5 per cent VAT rate alongside the UAE on January 1.

It will see the prices of food items, utilities, telecoms services and other products increase.

The other Gulf Cooperation Council states are expected to follow later in 2018 or in early 2019.

Businesses are still being encouraged to register for the tax through the VAT.GOV.SA website – source

“No law shall be passed abridging the freedom of speech, of expression, or of the press…”

IMF keeps strong growth outlook for PH economy

MANILA— International Monetary Fund (IMF) remains optimistic on the sustained strong expansion of the Philippine economy but cited the possible impact of external developments as a downside risk to domestic growth.

In a statement after the recent IMF Team Article IV Consultation, the multilateral lender said the economy “continued to perform well” as shown in the 6.9 percent output in 2016 and 6.5 percent growth in the first half of the year, boosted by strong domestic demand, exports recovery and fiscal impulse.

It continues to see “favorable” outlook for the economy amidst external headwinds.

It maintained its 6.6 percent growth projection for the domestic economy this year and 6.7 percent next year “owing to continued robust domestic demand.”

Inflation is seen to average at 3.1 percent this year and three percent next year, within the government’s two to four percent target for 2017-19.

As of end-October this year, rate of price increases averaged at 3.2 percent.

Last October alone, inflation ticked up to 3.5 percent from month-ago’s 3.4 percent on account of faster increases in alcoholic beverages and tobacco; housing, water, electricity gas and other fuels; communication; recreation and culture; and restaurant and miscellaneous goods and services.

Year-ago inflation is lower at 2.3 percent.

The statement said the current inflation environment reflects “stable commodity prices and a near zero output gap.”

External and fiscal positions of the country “are robust”, it said, even as the current account balance is near zero, due mainly to higher importation in line with the increased demand of the domestic economy.

“The current account balance is projected to record a small deficit in 2017, because of strong infrastructure-related import growth,” it said.

The projected deficit in the current account position is seen to be countered by the robust gross international reserve amounting to USD81.35 billion as of last end-September this year, which is enough to cover 8.5 months’ worth of imports of goods and payments of services and primary income.

IMF eyes a government budget gap level of about 2.4 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) this year and net government debt of 34.6 percent of GDP, with government debt projected to decline as a percent of domestic output.

“Risks to the outlook are tilted to the downside, but the Philippines is well equipped to respond should risks materialize given its strong fundamentals and available policy space,” it said.

On the banking industry, the IMF said the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ (BSP) policy stance remains to be appropriate but pointed out that “the BSP should be ready to tighten if there are signs of overheating.”

“The authorities’ intention to unwind the high banks’ reserve requirements over time would reduce macrofinancial risks,” it said.

“However, this reform should be carefully calibrated and timed, and should aim to keep domestic liquidity broadly unchanged. The exchange rate should continue to move freely in line with market forces, with foreign exchange intervention limited to smoothing excessive volatility in both directions,” it said.

The report also “welcomes the recent amendment to the AML (Anti-Money Laundering) law to include casinos.”

“Notwithstanding this notable progress the AML/CFT (Combating the Financing of Terrorism) framework could be strengthened further by amending the bank secrecy law and making tax evasion a predicate crime,” it added.
